The Point

Where Is The Focus

I search the Bible for…focus.  The actual word.  Do you know how many times the word focus shows up in the bible?

Zero.

{at least in my ESV translation}

How strange.  And unhelpful.  I need to know how to focus, where to focus.  Why to focus…

I break out my trusty and well worn thesaurus.

what I really mean is

what I really need is

center, focal point, center of attention, hub, pivot, nucleus, heart,

emphasis, accent, priority, attention, concentration.

theme, concern, subject matter, topic, issue, thesis, point, thread; substance, essence, gist, matter.

cornerstone.

“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” — Psalm 118:22

What is your cornerstone today?  Around what, do all things pivot?

Is it schedule or money or mood swings?  Is it acceptance or recognition?

Perhaps the “what” should have been “who” all along.

With whom does your heart lie?  With whom does your focus reside?

Fantastic question! The answer would seem easy enough. For some reason my answer didn’t come right away. Why? because my heart doesn’t lie with one it lies with many. My family as a whole is my focus and my heart lies with each of them.

Oh how I needed to read this today! And now hear the song “Jesus, be my center” moving sweetly through my mind.

All of me must revolve around Him.

This was beautiful! I’m not sure I can answer that easily. So many facets to my life. I struggle with making my faith and God my cornerstone and getting caught up in family with everything revolving around that.
Great food for thought!

You intrigued me to the point I had to search for scripture on focus. I found a site with Bible versus on staying focused. You can find them here, http://www.openbible.info/topics/staying_focus. Honestly, God is my cornerstone and who I pivot around. He is the wheel in the center of the wheel.

OH my word. This hits deep.

Your heart–the words that spring forth–has come alive, even though you may feel the opposite, sweet, wise Ari.

That is a tough question. I guess the answer has always been God and my loved ones because with out those 2 things I am nothing.

My focus has been completely thrown off this morning! It’s like I forgot to put in my contacts and I can’t see clearly beyond myself. Thanks for the timely reminder! I think it’s time I go spend some time with God to get my vision corrected.

Great insight here — most often, my focus is the proverbial “squeaky wheel.” Is there such a thing as spiritual ADHD? Thanks for some much-needed encouragement today … a reminder that to really focus (verb) on what matters, the One who is the cornerstone must become our focus (noun).

After 4 days away from them – I realize my focus, my center, the cornerstone of our family – are our boys. When I picked their thrilled little bodies up and swung them around at the baggage claim today, I felt a piece of me that had been missing all week shift back into place. And suddenly our teeny house or our old crazy cars seemed completely irrelevant in the face of these precious faces.

I was surprised to read that the word “focus” isn’t in the Bible. Obviously, the concept is there.

But yet, we often miss even that. I wonder if we are too busy multi-tasking every second to be truly acquainted with focus.

Hebrews 12:1-3 says, “Let us FIX our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith….” (The whole passage is awesome, if you have time to look it up.) It speaks to me of permanent focus, which I desperately need.
