Welcome To The Ultimate Blog Party

by Arianne on March 19, 2009

babywearing

Welcome to the party!  I’m so glad you came.  I’m Arianne, and I am bad at small talk.  Want to just come on in?  There’s a door prize, so keep reading…

I live in Chicago-land but am a California girl at heart.  Chicago is wooing me, big time, but I’ll always have a bit of hippy-ness to me.

At this blog you’ll find my story.  My story of my life and my family, my job and my mothering.  Not surprisingly, a big part of what I write about is my three boys.  All of them have autism, all of them are on a constant life roller coaster, and all of them are absolutely magical children.  I like writing about special needs parenting, because I know as a reader I appreciate the voice it gives parents like me.  I’m honored to be my kids’ mom.

I love to vlog, even though I don’t do it that often.  One of my favorite videos is me showing my kids and their cuteness. Take a look:

Begging For Mercy from To Think Is To Create on Vimeo.

One of my favorite posts is called 50 Things I Like About Myself.  Not because I think I’m necessarily super cool, but because the exercise of jotting all 50 things down really made me view myself in a new light.  If you want to post 50Things too, please leave a link here in the comments.  I’d love to get to know you! Be sure to check out the comments on the post to read what others said about themselves too.  We ladies can be so hard on ourselves sometimes, so anything that empowers and inspires is something I hold on to.

I love to laugh and to make people laugh (really is there any better thing in life?), but most of my writing here is usually more of the “pouring out my soul” variety.  For pithy one liners and over all goofiness, come find me on Twitter.

If you like to do reviews, get cool perks or participate in fun campaigns, you’ll want to know that I’m also the Director of Community Development for One2One Network.  I love my work with them, because I get to work with bloggers I admire and adore, and I also get to give peeps free stuff.  Blogging does have it’s perks, right?

I’m also one of the WalMart Elevenmoms, a social media group that was created to start a conversation in blogland, one that was independent (i.e. we are are not a hive mind) and one that could help shape what WalMart was doing in this web 2.0 space.  I’ve met incredible people and have had some great opportunities.  Lots more to come in the future!

What else you should know before you go win an awesome prize: I am a Twilight addict, I love to dance (especially The Carleton), and I enjoy smart people doing smart things.

What should I know about you?  I’d love to hear it.  In fact, I’m giving away a Flip Video Camera to one of you just for telling me something interesting about yourself.  Cool, eh?

How to Enter:

1.  Leave a comment here telling me one interesting thing about yourself.  Don’t make it lame or it won’t count.  This comment is required for entry!

2.  Post about this contest on your blog, leave your link in an additional comment, and you get one additional entry.

3.  Tweet about this contest (include contest link and @ToThink in your tweet), leave the link to the tweet in an additional comment. You get one additional entry per tweet. This can be done up to one time per day until giveaway is over.

4.  Grab the code for my blog badge (in the sidebar!) and post on your blog or social media site, leave each link in a separate comment for additional entries.

All entries will be verified, I look forward to hearing everyone’s comments!  Contest ends March 27th at noon, the winner will find out that day.  Good luck!!

Thanks for visiting my party, I can’t wait to come see yours!

Not sure if this is interesting enough, but my resume contains the following careers: telemarketer (in high school), Kirby sales (in college), Library card catalog filer, TV news camera operator, teacher, Dean of girls, gift shop manager, author, HR Director…

(And I'd love a Flip video camera because the one I have was fried when my iced tea flipped out of the cupholder in the car and landed upside down in my purse.)

Nice to 'meet' you. You are doing lots of interesting things; I'll be back.

Interesting, huh? I got nothing.

How about embarassing moments? Cuz I have lots of embarassing moments. Like one time in band camp…..OK, not band camp, although I was in band and I did go to band camp.

Like, that one time I clogged the toilet and made it overflow right before my date with a new guy arrived? Being the classy girl I am, I made him wait with me for the apartment complex maintenance guy to come unclog the darn thing.

Or how about that one time when the trainer at the gym tapped me on the shoulder to inform me that I had dropped a pair of panties out of my gym shorts? Horror, oh horror.

Or when I was sitting around with a group of friends chatting and unvoluntarily let out a sonic boom? I tried to play it off as if it didn't happen (as if my friends were deaf and couldn't hear a fart only 5 ft away from them). This happened over 12 years ago and I;m still horrified.

Oh, there are many more embarassing moments but I am sure this is enough for you. Right?

I'm not very good at following the rules, am I?

An interesting thing about me is that I also grew up in Chicago. I loved the cold weather and snow. Now living in the south I get cold when it is below seventy degrees outside. I could never take that cold weather again.

I consider having my four kids my greatest accomplishment. I love everything about the experience – being pregnant, giving birth, breastfeeding, mothering/parenting….it's a true adventure everyday.

BTW, I've only been to Chicago twice, but, absolutely love it. If I had a second life, I would certainly want to live in Chicago.

I guess the most interesting thing about me is my passion for animals. I have 4 dogs, 4 parrots and 4 Rats (I don't even like creepy rats, but didn't want them to be snake food so I took them) all rescues. They needed homes, were disabled or neglected in some way and I have the room and the time to care for them and couldn't turn them away. The best part is I think they give me more than I can ever give them

Nice to get to know you more. I'm also in Chicago-land (NW burbs) but am originally from Northern VA. Let's see, something interesting about me, I was going to say how I really can't stand the texture of a kooshball but then I thought more interesting would be that I met my hubby while he was traveling for work, he stayed at the hotel I worked out. We dated long distance for 3 months, planned our 1st wedding in under 24 hours AND we have been married over 12 years!

Oh yea and blogging has plenty of perks! Love it!

My dog has had breast cancer, I have had breast cancer and one of my children has had breast cancer..all are survivors.

I am at this point in life- ok have for a long time not cared what others think or have andhave taught my kids just becuase they have a big house does not mean they have alot in life going for themselves- I am teaching my kids things you cannot take with you…but memories last forever and to make a difference in life as you go along and when you can…no matter if it seems small, it still is a difference.

I lived in the same house all my life until I married my husband at the age of nineteen. He was in the Air Force for 21 years. During that 21 years, we moved 16 times. After that, we moved another four times in eight years. We finally bought our first house four years ago! This is where we hope to stay.

Interesting thing about myself is that I really enjoy my job cleaning (no one at work wants to do it but I love it)
I am an aunt to two , a mom to two and a big sis to too
my baby sis and my son, both red heads, also have the same birthday
my daughter looks stunningly like myself at that age, and I have a pic of my mom , at my age, and its hard to tell us apart
oh, and I once posted a baby pic and labeled it as my son, where it was really my baby sis lol

I've been a police dispatcher for 22 years now at the same police station. My sister, who also started out as a dispatcher at this same department, is now a police sergeant..the only female our police department has. I've also been one of our union directors for almost 9 years now. My mother owns her own court reporting business and my stepbrother is an attorney..so our whole family does a little something in the law. My middle son also interned for Barack Obama's senate office a year ago. He graduates from college this May and I'd love to have this Flip to take a video of him receiving his diploma (and he's also in the running to give a speech at commencement).

I am not sure this is interesting but it's funny. I won tickets to the premiere of the Sean Penn movie At Close Range. Now this was way back in the 80's. So me and my sister headed off to the premiere. It was cool. We saw Madonna nd Sean Penn and other celebrities. When we finally got to our seats we noticed that Don Johnson was 2 rows behind us. Now this was the Miami Vice Don Johnson, so he was super duper hot. So the movie hadn't started and me and my sister were giddy. We finally got enough nerve to ask him for his autograph. So we go there ask and he is really nice about it. FInally I figured hell this is the only time I will see him so I ask for a kiss. He says yes. So I plant one right on his lips. Bold, rude, wreckless yes but damn I couldn't help it. Yeah I kissed Don Johnson and I am proud of it.

Like you I'm the mother of a kid with a disability. My daughter has Williams Syndrome and is now 22 years old. Her older sister sometimes finds it irritating, but whatever.

As for something interesting, I typically go with the "high school dropout to finishing a PhD" or some such, but that's kind of lame-o. Instead, the oldest kid can: burp the alphabet and touch the tip of her nose with her tongue (though not always at the same time); the youngest has a rather unique talent – you know armpit farts? She can make them with her legs and her neck. I'm such a proud mother. =)

Over the summer, I realized just what a strong woman I am. My husband had to move 9 hours away for a job. I was left to get a house ready to sell while taking care of 3 small kids. During a two month period, I painted nearly every room, learned how to patch holes in the walls, I did landscaping, held a garage sale, did some major cleaning, and got our lives wrapped up in our community. I then packed the 3 kids and drove 9 hours (which was much longer with all the pit stops) to put our family back together. It was an insane time and looking back, I can believe I did it.

Many years ago, the company that I worked for got the contract to check the torque on the bolts of the antennae of the Sears Tower in Chicago. I got to accompany the work crew climbing ladders inside the antennas over 250 feet straight up. What an adrenaline rush! The antenna sways in the wind like a moving bus, and at the top is an access hatch (which is used for changing the lightbulbs at the top) which provides the most stunning view of the city ever seen!

Really great video!

One interesting thing about me, is that at age 20 (some 20+ years ago), I brought my own house. A total handi-man special that was falling apart. I basically redid the whole house. Some with help, like the electric and roof and lots by myself. Took down walls and all…I also ended up with a nail in my foot the first week I owned the house. lol Shortly after the house was totally renovated, I met my husband and sold the house. But I learned a lot about being self sufficient and that if you put your mind to it, you can do it!
Thanks so much for this wonderful giveaway!

I am 10 weeks pregnant and nothing sounds good except junk food…basically anything we don't have in the house and is sold at a restaurant…talk about expensive and awful for my health. But the few things that are most appealing to eat from my pantry currently are: pasta with butter and parmesean cheese, crackers with squirt cheese (can't get enough of the stuff) and apple juice.

Something interesting about me…I gave birth to my daughter 4 months before I turned 17, and went back to high school. My mother kicked me out 3 months before I was to graduate so I had to get an apartment in a new city, put my 2 year old daughter in daycare and start a new school to complete high school. I graduated with an 85 average. I then went on to complete an LPN program, graduating at the top of my class and an RN program, completed with marks in the high 80's. Things have worked out between my mother and I, as she became ill with cancer and one has to let things go. Never hold a grudge or it will eat you up. My daughter is now in second year university so I guess I instilled a sense of schooling being important. Things always work out for the best!
Thanks so much for having me to your fantastic webpage. Stop by mine if you have a chance.

I'm not sure how "interesting" this is but I'll give it my best shot ;-)
I learned how to drive a stick shift car when I was 16. The first time I drove it into a high traffic area I killed the car smack dab in the middle of an intersection right as the light turned red. I was convinced that I was about to be barreled over by a truck coming my way and panicked. I never drove a stick shift again, and to this day I panic every time I try to "re learn" driving a stick shift. Yes, my friends, only automatics for me.

Instead of being interesting, maybe this should be classified as weird. I'm obessed with New York City. I won a trip there 4 years ago and now all I think about is going there. I'm scheduled to go for the 4th time this May. I have lived in Seattle my whole life and never even thought about going to New York until I won the trip. I even hate to fly (you can't travel much farther than Seattle to NYC in the US) but I will suffer the flight just to be there. I Love everything about the city. It's my new guilty pleasure.

I really enjoy visiting grocery stores that cater to specific ethnic cultures, even if I do get stared at by the other shoppers.

It's a neat experience because many of these tend to have a better variety of specialty foods than a regular supermarket (and a better variety), and their authentic foods usually don't have any artificial ingredients that are difficult to read. Each time I go, I usually pick up something new to try.

Something interesting about me. It's not really about me, but my family ( Grandma & pa, Mom, Aunt & Uncle) traveled the world. My Grandfather was a professor of English and he taught English as a foreign language. As a girl, my Mother lived quite awhile in Zambia, Africa. Her stories of childhood are amazing. Like the path that they would take to get to the water had a tree along the way that was a home to baboons – they knew that if they were noticed, the baboons would scream & throw things at them, they would try & tip toe past. Another favorite Africa story is how my whole family was driving home from an event and got lost down some rural roads. They drove on for some time and saw tiny lights – they were glad to see a small town ahead. As they got closer, they realized it wasn't a town, but a stampede of Elephants! They were seeing the carlight reflection in their eyes. They pulled off the road to avoid being trampled!

continued next post – I can't say what I want in one post :)

She also Lived in Saudi Arabia for a long period of time. There are some amazing stories there too. I'm taking up too much space so I will just say that in these times of terrorism, that my Mother has the fondest memories of the Middle Eastern people. She tells that they in general are the most kind, and giving peoples there are.

Their travels, I guess would have to make me somewhat interesting. They picked up pieces of all of these cultures they lived in. My fam was big on living off the American compounds and living like the locals. I grew up with family who had been influenced by the best and worst of the world. I see life through differently because of it.

I also have some very interesting pieces in my home from their travels. We have the most amazing Arabian feast when we all get together!

I would love to win a Flip – I've never had one – it would be fun to capure life where it happens!

Um… something interesting. Oh, here's one! I believe that God has a sense of humor. I never say, "Never," because He always turns my never into a forever. For example, I said I would never be a pastor's wife (long story… lol!). I married a deejay… and one year later he became the interim youth pastor at our church. He is now the full-time youth pastor :) I am now the full-time youth pastor's wife.

What about this one??? I was NOT going to have kids before age 25 because I wanted my Master's degree and to "have a life" first. Heh heh… I'm 27 and I have three daughters, ages (almost) 5, 3, and 7 months. Never say never, people! But, I love my life, and I wouldn't change a thing.

I REALLY want this flip! Our video camera broke {sob} and I'm just itching for a flip.

By the time I was 10, I had lived in three countries (France, Germany, and USA).

I adjusted well, however, I think I was clueless sometimes. When we moved from Germany to the USA, I never caught on that we were moving. We left one day and never came back. I was absolutely in la-la land because to this day I wonder, "What's up with that?"

But, country-jumping molded me into someone who easily and eagerly learns and accepts all cultures.

Let's see…something interesting? Well, you already know I have a twin. But something maybe you didn't know is that people ask us all the time if we're related to Marie Osmond. One day after work at Disneyland, Kim and I got stormed by a group of people from Japan. They kept saying, "Osmonds! Osmonds! Picture!" We kept trying to tell them that we were not Osmonds, but they insisted. So we thought, "Oh well!" And we put our arms around them and let their friend take a snapshot. LOL! Perhaps it made their day- who knows! ;)

Not really interesting, but I have fun decorating the house for the various seasons, especially fall and winter. One of the things I’ve started to do…I have a walking doll from when I was little that I’ve started making a display around. My style is very casual. My friends seem to get out kick out of me because I enjoy it so much.

I drowned my van!!! Yep, you heard me right. I drowned my van!! We live on a piece of land that slopes downhill and there is a lake right across the street. One day I forgot to put the emergency brake on and the van rolled backwards right before our eye and rolled into the lake!!!

We had to call the fire department that had to call their team that does underwater stuff to come and put on scuba gear and go down in the lake to hook the van up to pull out. All our neighbors came and took pictures even !!!!! It was quite the neighborhood event!!

So that’s the saga of the day I drowned my van!!!!

When I was in college in Pittsburgh, I filmed scenes as an extra in not one but two major films, "Wonder Boys" (with Michael Douglas and Robert Downey, Jr.) and "The Mothman Prophecies" (with Richard Gere), but lo and behold, after I talked up my "big debut" in each to the friends I dragged to the theater on opening day, I discovered that all of the scenes I was in had been cut from both movies! I guess that's not so much interesting as sad (and a lesson about counting chickens…), so for good measure I'll throw in the fact that I played Scrabble on a national circuit for about eight years.

Thanks for the giveaway!

10 years ago (a lil over!) I lived in a homeless/battered women's shelter. I had no car, no HS Diploma, no job, and 3 kids. 10 years later, I have a Security Clearance, work on a government installation, have had 2 cars, have my GED, 1/2 way to my AA, I'm driven, focused, and still a single mom (for the most part!). I love my kids and there is nothing I wouldn't do for them! And I wouldn't change a THING! :-)

I only spoke Greek until I was age 5 and had to start attending school. Then English became my second language. I grew up feeling like I was quite a minority until I was old enough to realize how being raised Greek was something to be proud of not ashamed of. But when you are between the ages of 5-14 other children can be not as accepting of those who are different!

I LOVE YOUR VIDEO!!!!!

Arianne, that was such a fabulous video.

Hmmm…. something interesting about me… let me think…

Okay, here's something rather heavy-duty:
I have a serious anxiety disorder (that I currently take medication for) and that causes me to throw up and pass out much more often than I would like. Although thanks to said medication it is quite under control at the moment and the last time I passed out was in November. But I'm scared to come off the medication.

Well, there's something to bring down the mood at the party. But since you have hundreds of comments here, I'm confident no one will read it, so the mood will remain as fun and upbeat as your video.

Thanks for partying girl! You ROCK!

These are funny to read :)

I was a flight attendant for American Airlines based out of Boston. I quit shortly before 9/11 and was shocked when I found out that one of the flights was the same route I used to fly quite often. I always wonder what could have happened if I had not quit.

And if that isn't interesting enough, I have another. I have a nephew that is 2 years older than me :)

I never went to real school as a child, never set foot in a classroom, I was homeschooled K-12, and this was back in the days when homeschooling wasn't commonplace or well-known. It was funny, whenever we'd go out somewhere, people would always ask my sister and I if it was a school holiday. We thought it was the weirdest thing, since all we'd ever known was homeschooling!

My parents were sharecroppers in Arkansas and we moved every couple of years it seemed. We moved to Kansas City when I was 10 but lived in at least 4 different places in the next 8 years. I married a military man when I was 18 and have since lived in 2 foreign countries, 4 states and visited numerous others. I guess I'm just a rolling stone.

As a teen Army bride in Germany with 2 babies and a husband who was in the field away from home a lot we decided to drive to visit him one weekend when we were allowed to and I almost crossed into Czechoslovakia. I turned around just in time. After serving 24 years in the military we are older and wiser and can laugh about things like that, but it wasn't funny at the time.

Is this interesting or just weird? I have webbed toes (and can't swim!) I have 3 sons, and each of them also has webbed toes. In fact, after being rushed in for an emergency C-section with my 3rd baby, I kept yelling out one question: "Does he have webbed toes?" –They thought I was crazy, but then, the nurse said, "Yes, actually, he does!"

7 years ago, I realized how important it is to have a video camera and to use it. My daughter Hattie was born unexpectedly at 27 weeks. I had a big bulky video camera that I would lug to the hospital every day. It sat in my locker. A newborn in the NICU doesn't really do much. I took small shoots every now and then. Then her health took a real nosedive. We realized that there was a good chance she wasn't going to make it. I started taking more video, but really it was too late. My little Hattie died. The video of her last week is just too painful to look at as she looks so sick. My husband won't look at those shots at all. I was left with just a few minutes of video. I made a beautiful video of what I had using still shots and the video. I love sharing it, but it leaves me always wishing for one more picture, one more cuddle. Hug your kids tight and record as much as you can.

I take in foster animals- dogs and cats. I bottle-feed some, and raised my cat, Timmy from the day he was born, and my dog, Minnie, from about 3 days old. I also helped a cat, Eveline, when she gave birth, and bottle-fed the kittens when she ran out of milk.

I watched the natives dance at the chief shakes cermony(wrangell alaska) to honor the new totems, Sadly my father was lost at sea in a fishing boat accident so my mother being pregnant with her 7th child (6 of us kids under the age of 13) didn't want to live on the island any longer traveled by ferry, train, bus and taxi

I don't know if that's interesting, but being a young guy people may find it weird. I dunno. But I'm not here to spam your blog so i won't post the link. I'm totally psyched at the thought of winning a flip video camera. Hmm… what else is interesting about me. I play guitar, was in the Air Force for 4 years and got deployed for 6 months right after September 11th. I got out as soon as my time was up because I didn't agree with Bush's policies. I now have been working full time for 6 years as a Network Administrator for a school District. This job has been great because I feel like I'm helping kids to be prepared for the future.

Waiting for a glass of wine, with my girlfriend by my side at the bar counter a man with Middle Eastern looks began to "chat me up". I – at the time I had a steady boyfriend … politely declined his advances. Walking off I said to my friend "what a cheeky freak" … my friend turned around and with a very serious face said to me 'that "freak" happens to be a Prince, a real live.. walking ….. talking Middle Eastern Prince – just passing through – look there is his yatch". I looked and there it was .. the biggst yatch I had ever seen and there he was walking away no longer interested in me. And did I care – no, because my prince was my boyfriend but sometimes, now years later I wonder if I tossed to the wind … a kingdom and a princess crown :-)

Seriously. I had artificial lenses inserted, sort of like cataract surgery, only I didn't have cataracts. So now instead of not being able to read without coke bottle glasses because my nose gets in the way of getting close enough to the page, I can drive legally without corrective lenses (well, except for the ones that are a now a permanent part of me), which is pretty awesome.

Also, I feel just a little bit like the six million dollar man.

Hi. I was born with a congenital heart defect. The doctor's told my parents that I would never leave the hospital but they would not even give them an estimate of how long I would live because they had no idea if I would last through the day or not. They said that I needed heart surgery but first I needed a blood transfusion. I wouldn't make it through the surgery without the transfusion but they also said that my heart was too weak for the transfusion. Talk about a Catch-22!

This coming July I will be 52 years old. I have two grown children and 5 beautiful grandchildren.

Everyone was so sweet and helpful, but they tried to give me *real* directions which my brain just does not process so I'd be all Thanks but left or right, that's all I need to know.
My oldest daughter was the *lookout* since I have something of a lead foot. ;-)
This was way before the day of personal dvd players or anything and we had a blast- Livin' La Vida Loca was one of the more popular songs of that time and to this day we cannot not hear it without blasting and dancing.
My daughters and I are super close, now they blog with me.

Something interesting about myself…I was engaged to someone else before I got married. My ex called off our engagement and broke up with me with a phone call while I was at work. Even though I am married now…and my husband knows this…it still upsets me this very day because I don't know why.

I have a dominant eye, so my vision is a bit blurry. I just got contacts and one len doesn't do any vision correction while the other one does and my vision will continue to be blurry until my "bad vision" eye becomes use to the adjustment….so they say, we'll see.

I was hired to cater several parties for Donald and Joyce Rumsfeld (before he became our illustrious Secretary of Defense. He was always very charming at the time, and his wife very lovely and down-to-earth.

I'm an extremely loyal person, fiercely protective of those I love, even from stupid things they want to do. ;)

I read at least 5 books a week, cover to cover. I'm not that smart, I'm just a really fast reader. Always have been, I have no idea why!
