The Bullet Is No More

I made it almost 3 months since the day I first wrote about my beloved “bullet”, my son’s baby mullet.  That one year old baby hair that seems to only grow in the back, but you love its silky feel and that baby look so much you can’t bear to cut it?  Yeah that. Tonight, we cut off the bullet.  And I cried.

I didn’t cry because it looked bad, though at first I felt like he didn’t look like “himself”.  He isn’t really speaking you see, and he makes a lot of noises that wild animals make, so he could pull off that “I’ve been raised by wolves” hair really well.

I cried because my little man, now 19 months old, possibly our last baby, is growing up.  With this new cut he looks so grown up, more than I remember his brothers looking after their first cut.  I was instantly regretting getting rid of those lovely locks, the hair I like to play with and pat when he’s sad or overwhelmed.  I felt as though I was being forced to acknowledge something I wasn’t ready to acknowledge.  {tiny whisper} He may not be a baby anymore.

Since I have a job now and am more official than just, “my mom writes”, I do see the kids less than before I had a job.  So watching my little guy go from baby to boy in a matter of 10 minutes, when I miss that baby on a daily basis as it is, was really hard.  Painful, in fact.

However, by the time he was going to bed tonight, I found that I was really getting into this new cut.  It doesn’t get food stuck in it, and I can see the back of his neck (and nuzzle it relentlessly).  I already feel like he probably feels good about himself, like he may feel a bit more grown up too.

I know I can’t deny his cuteness, even if I miss his longer hair…what do you think?

He looks so cute in the new cut! But I know exactly how you feel, I felt the same way when we cut Kristian's hair a few years ago. They just seem to suddenly look such big boys… Merry Christmas to you and your family!

He is SO cute, and he does look older with his new haircut, but really too cute for words!

He is A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E w/ or w/o the bullet. A big MWAH for both of those oh so kissable cheeks!

That first cut is always the hardest. BJ had the bullet too. Long golden locks with slight curls on the end. I cried the whole day we cut his off. I actually had the stylist put it in a ponytail before she cut it so I could save it.

He look adorable now! And you're right, he does have that proud gleam in his eyes!!

Big hugs girl! I know it's hard ;)

He looks absolutely adorable!
You are a much braver woman than I. Luke is STILL rocking the bullet. I think we'll get it cut in the next few weeks, but I've been saying that for months…

He looks so happy! And if you'd smeared him with applesauce and stuck chunks of tree bark down his pants doesn't matter…that smile shows he LOVES it! It's precious. But it's ok to be a teensy bit sad to see the baby go. My baby just turned 5 and it was a physical ache because it seemed to age ALL my kids. Is ok to be emo-mommy about it. {{HUGS}}

Looks great!

We recently gave our 19mo his first haircut. He had a similar baby mullet. And though I loved the locks, he looks so cute in his big boy haircut.

Problem with boys is that they need haircuts so much more often than little girls.

Emma is quite taken by him!

Normally Emma doesn't pay attention to what is on the computer unless it's a video but my my was she staring at the boy with the new do!

Your 19 month has twice the amount of hair as my 14 month old and that is with the new do.

On Christmas Day, we were playing this loud raucous game, and during a lull in the action I heard my Mother in law say to Finn "your hair is atrocious". It gave me the giggles. I understand the appreciation of the baby hair. I'm not ready for the haircut. I give you props.

My boy is also rocking the bullet. It's long and curly and I have to physically restrain myself from putting bows in it. My mom says I'm going to need to be sedated when I finally give in and cut it.

If the results are as cute as yours, I think I might be okay.

He is adorable! But you're making me awfully glad I have a girl! My mom and MIL have both mentioned cutting her hair and I can't help giving them dirty looks! She's got the most wonderful baby curls!

He is so, so incredibly adorable and still looks like a sweet little baby to me. I'm on my way to spank him RIGHT NOW.

I can relate. This past July I gave birth to my second child. On the very next day after I returned home from the hospital, with all my emotions amuck my husband cut, no butchered my son's hair. You see while in the hospital I'd discussed cutting my little guys hair (which was something like Zach Effron's) but I wanted him (age 4) to choose the style). My husband who has no hair and is in the military usually just takes those cutter things and shaves what hair he has off. He happened to be doing that when my son came up to him and told him he wanted to cut his hair. The result – my little guy was nearly bald, and I cried for two hours at how "grown up" and not like "himself" he seemed.

Oh gosh, his hair looks SO good, but I totally understand not wanting to cut it. Baby hair is deliciously soft and oh so baby. They grow up too fast, huh momma. *hugs*

Happy New Year cutie!

Ahhhh! so cute! What a little man. I know it's hard to have your little one grow up. My baby is 16 months old now and I don't think I will have another either. I am really trying to cherish every moment with him. I haven't cut his hair yet, and it is a wild mess in the back!

Oh my gosh! This cracked me up! My son is 21 months and is still sporting his mullet and I can't bear to cut it. Now that his hair has become a topic of conversation brought up by friends referring to it as a "joe dirt" haircut I feel like I should… but still don't want to. Thanks for sharing your adorable pictures of your son. His haircut is very cute even if it's no longer a party in the back! Elizabeth
