Writer’s Inspiration For The Soul (A Giveaway!)

by Arianne on December 18, 2008

**Giveaway is over, thanks to all who participated!

I have been diversifying my “bag” lately, but I am first and foremost a writer.  I admit that I get most of my inspiration from the steam in the shower, but I also notice my writing suffers when I’m not reading something regularly.

Sometimes I need to be reading fiction, need to get my head into that swirly, fantasy world so that I can feel myself connect more with that tortured artist that resides in my soul.  Other times, I have the burning desire to read through all my RSS blog feeds and then keep on going until I’ve had my fill of the personal outpouring that goes on within our ’sphere.  Still other times, nothing but a really great magazine is all that’s required to get my creative juices flowing.

I think magazines that are well done can offer so much to writers, anything from the latest buzz to serious home fanciness, it all adds value to my bag of tricks.  Giving magazine subscriptions as gifts has always been a fun thing for me to do, and that’s why I’m excited that I get to give two of you dear readers that very gift!

Giftscriptions has 50 magazine selections to choose from, and the cool thing about it is that you pay the $20 for the subscription, and your gift recipient gets to take their own pick of the litter.  It comes in a nice box so that there’s even something to unwrap.  I got the chance to get my own, and I had to think about it for all of two seconds before deciding on Martha Stewart Living as my new “inspiration” medium.  I can’t wait!

Win it! Giftscriptions rock, and they want to give two away to you guys (two winners!).  I’ll get it to you by Christmas, so this giveaway is a quickie and is ending on Monday December 22nd at noon.  To enter, leave a comment here telling me what your writing inspiration is, is it your favorite book?  Magazine?  Blog?  I want to know!  You can get extra entries by tweeting and/or blogging about this contest (total of three entries per person.  Please leave a separate comment for each entry.  Good luck!

My family is my inspiration for writing. (I like to share information with other moms at the same stage of life!)

I'm a brand new blogger so I'm taking inspiration from everything: my son, blogs, my dreams, books I'm reading. I need to start keeping a notepad next to my bed for the great ideas I have in the middle of the night!

I'm not the best writer and really just have a family blog…so, obviously, my inspiration is my husband and son :-)
However, I do LOVE to read…the Bible, or any book I'm reading in a Bible Study, inspires me. I love fluff like People, InTouch, OK, etc. to peruse at Barnes and Noble. In fact, I'm going there to do that tonight!!

My writing inspiration is actually my personal journals. I have kept a journal since I received my first one around the age of 9 or 10 so lets just say I have a few. I have chronicled some major events in my life along with many events that would probably be considered boring and mundane, but all I have to do is read a few pages and the wheels start turning. Each entry is written so differently depending on that point in my life so ironically I find more inspiration from my own writing than anything else out there.

I enjoy writing for my personal enjoyment. I'm not good enough at it to sell anything, but that's fine. I get my inspiration from my own life experiences — and also books, magazines, blogs and newspapers. Almost anything can be worthy of a story if you look hard enough!

Sad to say I know, I get most inspired when I'm feeling blue. My feelings flow out of me when I'm sad, upset, stressed or depressed. I have SAD that I don't treat with medicine, so in the winter months I feel that way & keep a journal – it helps to let it flow. Creates clarity. Christmas helps keep me excited & active.
My favorite book. Hmmm…. how about a list of a few – "I Know This Much Is True" by Wally Lamb,"Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez , "Seret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" Mitch Albom. Top of my head favs.
Great giveaway!!

I enjoy reading my favorite magazine "Cemetery Dance"; I'm inspired by reading the interviews with working writers and there's always some great short stories in the magazine to inspire my own imagination.

My writing inspiration is my need to write. I love writing…but it's my family and friends and my need to share information and keep people updated and informed.

Elsie December 20, 2008 at 12:36 pm

My writing inspiration is Dr. Seuss, Mark Twain, my son's writing, , and reading non- fiction about many subjects that interest me, such as animals, and the Earth… Passion for experiences, and an awareness and appreciation each day, help to motivate me.

I am a magazine fiend and get lots of my inspiration for posts and articles from the things I read in them. I love magazines for the visual stimulation they offer and for the ability to get good information in short bursts – great for busy parents!

zmama December 21, 2008 at 3:06 am

Liz December 21, 2008 at 10:19 am

I totally love magazines, and have actually written a post about being a magazine junkie, I think I have 27 December issue magazines, of wide assortment. I do get inspired by my children, and hubby at times, and at other times books I'm reading or my Bible studies also inspire me. I just play it by ear, and live it day to day for inspiration. Thanks
