Oh Baby, That Hair

by Arianne on October 2, 2008

My youngest is 16 months old, and could very well be my last baby.  I find myself feeling more bittersweet than ever as I watch him grow like a weed and stand up to his two big brothers all on his own (smacking their faces is his weapon of choice).

So, not surprisingly, one of the things I’m holding on to right now is his hair.  Not literally holding on (although I do play with it a lot…so silky!), but holding on to his baby look.  He’s never had his hair cut, and I know how that first meeting with scissors can make baby boys turn into big boys, and all at once my baby will officially disappear.  Leaving me in a puddle on the floor.

My family has launched a full fledged campaign to try and convince me, pressure me and cajole me into cutting his hair, but it’s not…um…cutting it.  I won’t do it.  You can’t make me.  You’re not the boss of me.

I mean, just look at this:

How could I possibly?  He’s been accused of having a mullet, but I propose mullets are back in style.  It’s a baby mullet, or, a “bullet”.  Bullets are the new black.

How about this:  as soon as he can say the words “I want my hair cut off so I look way older”, then I’ll let scissors get near him.  Until then?  Accept the bullet, beyotches.

I love it! He wears that bullet well, and I can totally understand why you want to hang on to it!

I love it too! We finally got Owen’s hair cut for the first time last month–he’ll be three in December. He has this fine, wispy hair and there was really never enough to cut–but one day I looked at him and realized he looked like he’d stuck his finger in a light socket. What hair there was stood straight up in all directions and got all matty in the back like Barbie hair. So we cut it–and now he looks like such a BIG boy. Sniff! I say hold on to it if you want to. He’s got plenty of years ahead of him for haircuts.

I’m with you! My 19 month old has never had a hair cut, either. His hair is not as thick as your son’s, but it’s wispy, so it hangs over his ears and looks generally ridiculous. But I know that as soon as I cut it, he’s going to look 100% like a BOY, and I’m just not ready for that. I’m glad to hear that I’m not aline.

OMGosh, have you seen a recent pic of Popeye?? Because with their long hair, our boys look even more alike!! People keep telling me to cut my boy’s hair too, and I haven’t done a thing because I CAN’T DECIDE!!! ugh.

It’s always so bittersweet when little boys get their first haircuts. I don’t blame you for putting it off for your little guy… plus, the bullet is a look that works for him!!

Can you just consider the non-haircut going natural? Like going Green?

Is that a stretch?

I love his hair, it’s cute! Cut it when you feel ready to cut it!

You let him be the baby as long you YOU want!

Don’t cut it.
it’s adorable.

At least not until he gets called a girl(even wearing all boy colors), it bothers him, it accidentally becomes a craft project with scissors or if by some chance he gets gum in it.

Until then, keep it momma.

If anyone can rock the mullet, it’s him.

And, it does look SO SOFT. Did your other boys have hair like his?

Oh he’s darling. And I don’t know why others have to concern themselves so much about a child’s hair- especially when he’s not their own! The right time to cut will be when you know it, and feel it. Loving the bullet!

PS Have you talked to his brothers about making sure they do NOT go after him with the scissors, too???

PPS I’ve had that conversation with my boys already. “You should NEVER cut Ivy’s hair with your scissors.”

Oh my, I have the same issue. I’ve tried to convince myself that I should market barrettes for boys…there has to be a market for that right? RIGHT? Poor thing has hair in his eyes all the time.

Awwww, he wears it so well! Just a couple of weeks ago I had to cut Peyton’s mullet off, she wasn’t pulling off the “business in the front, party in the back” look so well. As long as you don’t let him get all “Celine Dion’s son”, he’s perfect just as he is! He’s only this age once.

Oh me too. I am so reluctant to cut may 15 month old’s hair. I just tell people that it is doctor’s orders to not cut it since at the last appt she said, “Oh, you can’t cut off those beautiful curls.” Of course it’s starting to fall in his eyes so I considered trimming his bangs which would lead to a “bullet” cut. I think they will be all the rage with the toddler set this year.

BJ had a bullet too!! He was almost 2 before I cut his beautiful blonde locks, and instantly he looks 10 years older. It was terrible and sad. I say hold out as long as you can. Bullest *are* the new black. Fo’ realz.

I’ll send you a picture of BJ’s bullet when I get home on Monday. So super-sweet!

Don’t succumb to the pressure.
I didn’t cut my son’s hair until he was 18 months old. He is a perfectly fine well adjusted boys boy of 7 years.
I love the little baby curls they get and once you cut it they will never come back. I think that your idea is good as long as you do not let it get to the middle of his back – seriously at work last week there were twins in with their mom and i thought they were girls cause they had beautiful to die for blond hair all the way to their butts. I said “bye girls” and the mom said “they are boys” OOOPS. But i am sur eyou won’t let it get that far so what is a few more months of cute baby hair (maybe you could make it a birthday present for when he turns 2)

I saw him at church yesterday and couldn’t get over how cute he is. In fact all 3 of your little darlings were so cute. They are getting so big.

What a sweet little pumpkin! I so understand where you are coming from. Emily’s hair is soooo long and unmanageable and at first I said that were letting it grow out for locks of love, but now it is plenty long enough and I just can’t seem to do it. She will lose her sweet baby look and look like a big girl and I just am not ready for that. :( She is my last baby too so I feel your pain!

I love it! He looks adorable :). I was the same way with my baby too, he used to have long hair that stood straight up. Now he’s 3 1/2 and sporting a buzz-cut like his big brothers :).
